Cornish Mutual

We are an insurance company specialising in the agricultural sector.

What we do:

We provide a full insurance solution for our Members. We have a team of about 70 people in the Truro office handling calls and dealing with head office functions such as finance, IT, marketing and product development. We also have a team of about 25 people based in the 'field' visiting new and existing Members to help them deal with their insurance needs.

Why we became a healthy workplace:

Cornish Mutual is committed to supporting the health and well being of its employees. We recognise the importance of good physical health, and also the importance of good emotional health.

Recent health and well being activities:

Over the last 12 months we have been involved in a number of health initiatives such as health checks for staff as well as promotion of a number of awareness days around liver health, the importance of good sleep and bowel cancer.

We have also been involved in a lot of physical exercise opportunities. The biggest one was the ROC 5k where we had a team of 25 training together in the weeks beforehand and running together on the day. Some people started from having done no running to running the whole 5k.

We also had 36 people involved in the Get Active Challenge and we took part in the Cornwall Beach Games. We took part in the National Cycle to Work day and have organised table tennis and rounders after work.

We have also acquired a table tennis table for the office which means a lot more people are getting the chance to be active during their working day.


I had never thought about running before I came to Cornish Mutual but when people in the office were talking about running together and training for a 5k I thought I would give it a go. We started from 2 minutes walking, 1 minute running, right up to a slow consistent jog. I completed the 5k without walking and have since gone on to complete a half marathon!

Success Story

My name is Tony King and I'm part of the Maintenance Team at YMCA Cornwall.  When I first started working here, I spotted the Cycle to Work Scheme on a poster so I thought I would enquire about it.

It's very easy to set up; you can get up to £1000 which covers the cost of the bike, a lock, helmet and lights.  All you had to do was go to the bike shop and choose your bike.

Since getting my bike, I've now been cycling for the past 18 months from Hayle (to Penzance) which is 11 miles.  I feel fitter, I've lost weight and it has got me into cycling having been cycling in France and Belgium.  Next year I'm going cycling in Holland.

All in all, it's a good scheme and I would highly recommend it.
