What we do:

The Trust provides a range of mental health and physical health services to children and adults across the county of Cornwall in a variety of settings that include community hospitals and other inpatient facilities as well as community clinics and in people’s own homes. The organisation employs a large number of staff in a wide variety of roles who work across a wide range of shift patterns.

Why we became a healthy workplace:

There is strong evidence to show that good work is good for people’s physical and mental health by meeting a person’s need for identity, social role and status; and the health and wellbeing of its staff is central to the vision and values of Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT).

The Trust also recognises the evidence that a healthy workforce leads to improved patient experiences because of staffs’ ability to deliver high quality compassionate patient care.

Success Story:

"Feeling inspired by personal experiences attending Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course I have begun to consider how Mindfulness could be applied in the workplace and how it may offer a sense of support to those working in the high pressure environment within the NHS. 

Beginning from the position that as staff we share similar aims of caring for others and feel driven towards this aim by the nature of our employment, we also experience numerous pressures from other sources, I hope to invite and remind colleagues and myself that in order to carry out our work we must try and take good care of ourselves too. Caring for ourselves and others could be considered as two sides of the same coin.

I have begun coordinating regular sessions of a sitting practice offering an open invitation for staff to attend Mindfulness practice. Often this involves sitting still for up to 10 minutes while following a guided meditation through a CD or smart phone. Sometimes we mix it up a little with a Mindful movement practice which includes simple yoga type stretching and can be a good antidote to sitting and typing for long periods of time.

The sitting group is not part of my job but something I like to do in my lunch break, I see that myself and many staff also strive to work through lunch breaks and not take a rest. The group does not have specific aims but an aim of the group could be to create an open awareness of stress and invite colleagues to participate in a simple way to begin helping to manage stress. Within this aim there is the potential to foster a sense of community which offers a safe place to take rest and unwind, before carrying on with the rest of the day. I have received lots of anecdotal evidence by way of positive feedback from many of those who attend. I have encouraged regular attenders to pick up the baton in my absence and coordinate the group which has worked well. I have been supported by the Trust to promote the development of this type of group in other bases too."

A reduction in cost of advertising and agency fees attest to the fact fewer people leave the company and that candidates now approach Ginsters direct as they are seen as an employer of choice.  Number of applicants in 2005 = 2481, in 2006 = 3641 and in 2008 = 3764.  Advertising costs reduced from £50,743 in 2005 to £33,805 in 2007 and £18,126 in 2008.
