Why we became a healthy workplace:

We have over many years aimed to become an employer of choice and support our staff fully in their health, resilience and wellbeing.

Policing is at times a demanding, challenging and tough environment in which to work. High standards are expected from the communities we serve, the organisation itself and indeed the public who call on officers and staff, at their greatest time of need. We need a workforce who feel valued, can operate to their maximum efficiency and can take pride and satisfaction in the work they do. The Healthy workplace award offers a chance to reward individuals for the work they have done to support others and encourages our staff to adopt a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle.  Gaining maximum benefit from the internal resources provided and gaining further motivation from seeing the recognition the award affords.  Engagement in this scheme has enabled us to learn best practice from others in the community and work alongside other businesses that excel in prioritising and supporting the health and wellbeing needs of their people. Supporting our people in a rapidly changing world and environment is very much a top priority. The healthy workplace initiative without doubt supports us in this.

Recent health and well being activities:

All staff in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly BCU were encouraged and enabled to complete a personal Wellness profile. This gave individuals confidential and valuable insight into their current wellness behaviours.  It allowed people to reflect on a variety of issues - how they naturally cope with pressure and stress; their diet; their hydration and exercise levels; perceived physical health and their overall satisfaction with lifestyle.

Staff could access a one to one coach if required to support them in fully understanding their profile and formulating wellbeing goals for the future.

All sector and station Inspectors in the Cornwall & IOS BCU fully supported this initiative and used trend data to continually think of ways to improve the work environment for their staff - supported by the wellness team, senior management team and their BCU Commander.

Devon and Cornwall police has continued to expand the number of gyms at work locations across the Force including Cornwall & Isles of Scilly.  Current police stations with active gym facilities include Bodmin, Bude, Camborne, Falmouth, Launceston, Liskeard, Newquay, Penzance, St Austell and Truro.   Fitness leaders and gym managers at each location volunteer their support in getting others back on track with fitness goals.  On a one to one basis they have worked with individuals to develop and improve strength, agility or cardiovascular fitness.  The gyms are funded by small individual contribution and funding from the Force Sports Association.  Devon and Cornwall police have continued to expand this resource at all work locations where viable.

Devon and Cornwall Police has a Mental Wellbeing support network.  A key part of this is a network of peer supporters who have a lived experience or good understanding of mental health issues in the workplace.  These supporters received formal training from the Institute of Mental Health, Nottingham on affective peer support and supervision.  Personal biographies are posted on our internal intranet which all employees may view and use to request assistance.  or with their permission they can be referred by line managers. The Mental Wellbeing Network aims to reduce the stigma around mental health issues for staff, raise awareness and provide support.

We have in the last few months recruited Health & Wellness champions across the force, currently there are 185 across the force including 49 in Cornwall.

These champions are taking the lead delivering and promoting health & wellness messages.

Musculoskeletal conditions generally rise with age. The age group 50-64 are most affected by sickness absence not to mention the UK 50+ population is expected to increase by 32% between 2008 and 2030.
