Truro & Penwith College

One of the best tertiary colleges in the country for education & training.

What we do:

We offer a diverse range of educational opportunities in Cornwall and have achieved Grade 1 in every key category in a January 2007 Ofsted inspection report.

Why we became a healthy workplace:

A Sustainability Group was formed in October 2013 which is committed to working towards and promoting economic, social and environmental sustainability.  This includes actively promoting the Health and Wellbeing of all College users.  The Healthy Workplace award seemed the ideal opportunity to bring together all that we currently do and to look at areas in which we can improve.

Recent health and well being activities:

We have created a 'one stop' Health and Wellbeing  area on our Intranet which includes:

DSE ASSESSMENTS*EYE CARE*PHYSIOTHERAPY & SPORT INJURY*STRESS MANAGEMENT*ACTIVE TRAVEL*CYCLE SCHEME

We now send an E-bulletin every term to inform staff of Health, Wellbeing, Sport and Sustainability initiatives.

We have three enthusiastic Sport Activators who have a timetable of over 20 weekly physical activities/classes that staff can join in for free from Fab Abs and Cardio Cycling to Gym Sessions and Swimming.

The College continues to offer access to free part time courses for Staff and to promote and signpost staff to external agencies in Cornwall providing resources, information and activities to help maintain a health and wellbeing.

Staff from all departments and of varying fitness levels have successfully trained for and competed in the River Dart Mud Run, ROC 5k, Mild Night Runs with more events planned for the future.

St. Austell Brewery won a gold award on their first year of taking part in the programme. Chrissie Knight, Occupational Health Manager for the brewery, commented, “Caring for and investing in the workforce has always been a priority at the Brewery and it is wonderful to gain recognition for the work that takes place at all levels to ensure that we remain an employer of choice for people in the South West, which is not only because of the opportunities that exist at many levels within the organisation, but also because of the support and benefits that exist for all employees”

Employee Feedback

"As a company BT puts the Health and Wellbeing of its employees extremely high on its list of priorities and at the Consumer Sales Call Centre in Truro we’re very pleased that our work in this area has been recognised by a gold award.  Initiatives that we’ve spearheaded as a result of our involvement in the scheme have included workshops to encourage healthy eating and stopping smoking as well as promoting the use of our on-site gym.   Working towards and achieving the Healthy Workplace Gold Award has been an extremely rewarding process.  The assessment process has provided us with a framework to recognise the actions and activities that are already in place as well as to identify areas in which additional activity could take place"- Tracey Camps, BT Consumer Sales Truro.
