2015 Cornwall Beach Games - NEW DATE

10 Jul 2015

We are pleased to announce that the 2015 Cornwall Beach Games has a new date - Friday 10th July 2015!  This amazing news gives workplaces another opportunity to enter a team.

Due to a forecast of lightning and taking into account safety of participants we had to cancel the previous date (Friday 12th June 2015). This new date comes as the local parish and the RNLI give the go ahead to hold this amazingly fun event this year at Perranporth Beach.

So if you still wish to enter a team NOW’S YOUR CHANCE!

There is no limit to squad sizes but a minimum of 8 team members are required for the activities of which at least 2 must be female. If you are a small organisation and don't have 8 team members or struggle for females, Cornwall Sports Partnership will help matching you with another small organisation to create a team.

The Cornwall Beach Games has been co-organised by Cornwall Sports Partnership, the Health Promotion Workplace Health Programme and Cornwall College, to give Cornish companies the chance to have some active fun outdoors with their fellow colleagues and network with other businesses.

Activities involved in this year's Cornwall Beach Games include: Volleyball, Tag Rugby, Netball, Tug of War, the famous Sand Castle competition and new for this year a Treasure Hunt. The games are suitable for all ages, with no previous experience required and all equipment is provided (although bring a bucket and spade for your sandcastles).

The beach games provide a fantastic opportunity for Workplaces within Cornwall to take part in a great team building and networking event, utilising a range of informal sports and activities. We are surrounded by a fantastic environment in Cornwall and it's great to see businesses away from their core work on the beach engaging in physical activity and promoting their staff's wellbeing. Bruce Lockie, Physical Activity & Health Lead for Cornwall Sports Partnership.

The day costs £100 per team and places are available on a first come first served bases. The booking deadline is Friday 3rd July 2015. For more information please contact Bruce Lockie on 01872 323344 or email info@cornwallsportspartnership.co.uk

Cook Well, Be Well Challenge - Post Event

12 Jun 2012

Cornwall College helps companies Cook Well Be Well

Cornwall College hosted the first ever Cook Well Be Well Challenge in the kitchens at the Camborne campus recently, as part of a joint initiative between the NHS Healthy Workplace programme and Cornish-based company Rodda’s.

The competition, aimed at encouraging people to create and cook healthy meals at home, saw teams from a number of local businesses prepare a two course menu for four people based on “The Eatwell Plate”, using recommended portion sizes of fresh ingredients and cupboard basics whilst remaining within a budget of £10.

Rachel Faulkner, Workplace Health Coordinator for the NHS Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Health Promotion Service, and Dawn Hedger, Company HR Manager at Rodda’s Creamery in Scorrier near Redruth, organised the competition initially.

Dawn said: “Our Operations Director, Andrew Rodda, has always wanted the company to become involved in a venture that helps people cook, supports local producers and sparks new ideas, and this presented the perfect opportunity to do that. We wanted people to realise they can produce great meals on a budget using local produce and we’ve had some fantastic support from companies such as Brian Etherington Meat Company, Fal Fish and Newquay Fruit Sales, plus our sponsors Foot Anstey Solicitors, AC1 Recruitment and, of course, Cornwall College.”

Rachel added: “The Healthy Workplace programme supports companies in looking after their employees’ health and wellbeing, and the idea behind this competition is to promote healthy eating, not just at work but also at home with the family. It also gives people a chance to learn about ingredients, healthy substitutes and budgets whilst having fun and working as a team.  This is the first time we’ve held this competition, plus it’s the first one that’s been run in Cornwall and so far it’s been a great success.”

Simon Cook, Corporate Curriculum Lead for Retail & Service Industries at Cornwall College, said: “Anything that raises the profile and encourages people to cook, eat healthily  and have fun is something we want to be involved and in and we’re eager to support. Most of these teams have never entered a competition together before, but they’ve all put a lot of effort in and have done really well.”

The teams taking part had 90 minutes to prepare, cook and present their menus to the judges who, after tasting each teams’ dishes, declared the St Ives School team the overall winners.

Rachael Martin, Food Technology teacher, and Naomi Cleveland, Design Technology Technician at St Ives School, earned a trophy for their team, as well as a set of professional chef’s knives donated by Cornwall College Camborne and a Rodda’s cool bag full of goodies for each team member.

Rachael said: “We’re really pleased to have won. We had lots of ideas and practiced hard, which obviously paid off! We have to work with budgets and costings as part of the food technology curriculum at school, so I found that part quite easy.”

Naomi added: “We even had a team member missing today, so it was extra pressure and work for Rachael and me to get everything done in time. But even though it’s been exhausting, it’s been great fun and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: “Congratulations to the winning team from St Ives School, who worked hard to produce a delicious menu, meeting all the requirements of the competition and with a team member missing! The College is always supportive of initiatives like this, which involve and benefit the local community immensely. I’d also like to congratulate everyone involved in holding such a successful event, which I’m sure will go from strength to strength.”

Cornwall Beach Games - Post Event

31 May 2012

Cornish companies battle it out at the 2012 Cornwall Beach Games

Last week 22 Cornish companies battled it out, all in the name of fun, at a unique barefoot sports event in Newquay.

The 2012 Cornwall Beach Games saw approximately 250 people come together to compete in a series of fun activities at Newquay’s Tolcarne Beach on Friday 25 May.

Following the success of the first Cornwall Beach Games last year, the event was co-organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, the NHS Healthy Workplace Programme and Cornwall College, to give Cornish companies the chance to have some active fun outdoors with their fellow colleagues.

There was activity all day for the competitors, starting in the afternoon; with several rounds of beach games, including volleyball, football and handball. Teams then took to the water for a surf board paddle relay, before a final test of strength and stamina in the tug ‘o’ war event.

During a closing ceremony, all companies received a Beach games pennant to help remember the day and the top teams were presented with gold, silver or bronze awards; plus there was a separate award for the best sand sculpture. The celebrating teams were Harlands Accountants in third position, NHS Health Promotion Service with the National Trust in second place and HSBC as the overall winners. And, GE Money took the award for the best sandcastle.

Aside from winning though, the main objective for the day was to have fun and get involved in team building with work colleagues; everything was designed to encourage healthy participation.

Olympic torchbearer Mark Stevens also attended the event with his torch, adding some inspirational Olympic flavour to the day and offering a prime photo opportunity for participants.

From a participant's point of view, Lora Fleming, Director of the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, enthused: "It was a wonderful event which brought lots of different people together; both within and between teams. It was a lot of fun and there was something for everyone (including the creative sand sculptures) and it really demonstrated the range of healthy workplace activities and benefits".

Terry Stanton, Development Manager at Volunteer Cornwall, added: "I really enjoyed myself, joining the Cornish Mutual Team. It was one of those occasions when everything clicked; location and tremendous weather, but most importantly a great bunch of people".

Mike Thomas, Director of The Cornwall Sports Partnership, explained: “This event provided workplaces with a range of informal sports and activities, on the beach and in the water. It was fun, at times it was tough, but all day all we saw was smiles. At the end there were tired and weary bodies but the teams and individuals took to the events and the activities with plenty of enthusiasm and enjoyment.”

Rachel Faulkner, NHS Workplace Health Coordinator, commented: “It’s fantastic to be able to offer such an exciting event and inject a bit of fun to the end of a working week. We hoped the Beach Games would give employees the chance to have some fun with their workmates, meet new people and get a bit more active; going by people’s faces on the day, we 100% succeeded!”

Russell Lawrance, Director of Sport & Public Services, Head of A Levels for the College, remarked: "It really is fantastic to see the commitment and passion in which people throw themselves into this and there is genuine elation and disappointment on their faces when the results are announced!”

Due to the success of the event and the demand it attracted, the organisers are already putting steps in place to repeat a similar event next year. Be Active Truro

15 Aug 2011

This August 15 - 19, Truro will be hosting the first ever ‘Be Active Truro' Festival. The 5 day event will include a vast range of activities; from tennis to wheelchair basketball and Healthy Heart clinics to Zumba demos - all centred around Lemon Quay and Boscawen Park.

Working in partnership with Cornwall Sports Partnership; the festival aims to open up the opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience a variety of different activities, for free. With the ultimate aim that people will then choose to continue and participate in one of these activities as part of their lifestyle. This isn't a high octane, fiercely competitive athletic event! It's for the workers, residents and visitors of Truro to try something new. Whether it be a hobby for all the family or simply offer some inspiration, ‘Be Active Truro' has the best of what sport has to offer.

'Get involved...'

On the last day of the festival, 19 August, we are organising 'Sports Day'. The very words conjure up memories of eggs and spoons and tripping over your three legged partner. Well that's exactly what we are going to recreate on Lemon Quay! We are looking for businesses to
join in and submit a team of 4. The Sports Day will take place between 12 and 2 so can be squeezed into a lunchtime, and the winning team will receive their very own trophy and certificate to display proudly in the office!

If you would like to enter a team(s), please email
becky@eventcornwall.co.uk to register.

Visit www.enjoytruro.co.uk/beactivetruro for more information and event listing for the festival.

Cornwall Beach Games 2011

17 Jun 2011

Following the success of the Cornwall College Staff Games - Cornwall College, Cornwall Sports Partnership and Cornwall & Isles of Scilly NHS are organising the first Cornwall Beach Games 2011.

Russell Lawrance, Director of Sport for the College, remarked with a smile:
"The idea of the whole event is not so much about winning, it is about getting staff together from all the sites; it's great for morale. However having said that, the commitment and passion in which people throw themselves into this and the elation and disappointment on their faces when results are announced, may tell a different story! But whatever the desired outcome, the event is growing each year and it is getting better and better and I think that this reflects on the ethos of the organisation."

Equality & Diversity Conference

18 Nov 2010

80 people attended the conference ‘Working together: Breaking down the walls' in November. One of the workshops ‘Creating a healthy workplace for all' looked at the physical and psychological well being of staff. Participants, from the 3 NHS Trusts and County Council employees were asked to make a pledge - something they would change or implement back in the workplace that would enhance the health & well being of their team. Several key themes, relating to both physical and psychological well being emerged from the pledges, and the following is a summary of participants' thoughts and ideas.

Success Story

My name is Tony King and I'm part of the Maintenance Team at YMCA Cornwall.  When I first started working here, I spotted the Cycle to Work Scheme on a poster so I thought I would enquire about it.

It's very easy to set up; you can get up to £1000 which covers the cost of the bike, a lock, helmet and lights.  All you had to do was go to the bike shop and choose your bike.

Since getting my bike, I've now been cycling for the past 18 months from Hayle (to Penzance) which is 11 miles.  I feel fitter, I've lost weight and it has got me into cycling having been cycling in France and Belgium.  Next year I'm going cycling in Holland.

All in all, it's a good scheme and I would highly recommend it.
