Penwith Housing Association

Penwith Housing Association (PHA) part of the Devon and Cornwall Housing group is a non-profit making organisation building, improving and managing affordable housing in Cornwall.

PHA manages 6,500 rented homes across Cornwall. We support communities by providing affordable housing, working closely with residents, councils, funding agencies to make a difference to homes, places and lives.

PHA employs 123 staff.

PHA has always encouraged a healthy lifestyle and to ensure staff are involved, a Healthy Workplace Group was set up in 2010 with representatives from all offices/teams to look at ways of promoting the general wellbeing of staff including physical activity, healthy eating and mental health.

Recent activities/initiatives have included:

• Healthy Workplace intranet page set up
• flu jabs for staff
• new Corporate Eyecare scheme launched
• Stress Awareness Week activities including an Indian Head Massage workshop, Body Balance taster session and mug painting workshop
• pedometer challenge - 12 teams of 5 walking the South West Coast path from Minehead to Poole Harbour covering a total of 630 miles.

Plans for spring/summer 2011 include Sun Safe sessions, Weight Matters group, exercise taster sessions and entering a PHA team in the Beach Olympics!

PHA was awarded the Silver Healthy Workplace Award in February 2011 and is going for Gold in 2012!!!

Communication

Establishing and using effective channels of communication that engage employees are a key component in promoting employee health.  Examples: Health Notice Boards, Team Briefings, Internet/Intranet, Email, Wage Packet Inserts, Staff Surveys. 

Occupational Health

Where occupational health was provided, 39% of companies recorded a decline in short-term absence, whilst 28% experienced a reduction in long-term absence [CIPD 2008].
