CORNWALL BUSINESSES HAVE FUN IN THE SUN AT THE 2015 CORNWALL BEACH GAMES

Date: 3 Aug 2015

PRESS RELEASE

On Friday 10TH July 2015, 14 companies from across Cornwall headed to Perranporth Beach to take part in the annual barefoot sports competition.

The 2015 Cornwall Beach Games saw over 120 people come together and compete in a series of sporting activities such as Volleyball, Netball, Tag Rugby, Tug of War, Treasure Hunt and the famous Sandcastle building competition.

The event co-organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, Health Promotions’ Healthy Workplace Programme and Cornwall College gives Cornish Companies the chance to have some active fun outdoors with their fellow colleagues.

Bruce Lockie, Physical Activity Lead at the Cornwall Sports Partnership said: ‘The beach games provided a marvellous opportunity for workplaces within Cornwall to take part in a great team building and networking event utilising a range of informal sports and activities. It was fantastic seeing several businesses taking part in their first beach games, even though the original date was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. It’s great to see businesses away from their core work engaging in physical activity and promoting their staff’s wellbeing’.

During the closing ceremony, all companies received a Beach Games pennant to remember the day with the top 3 teams presented with an award to celebrate their achievements.  In third place was NHS Kernow, in second place was Francis Clark and in first place was St Austell Brewery.

Kirsten Freemantle from winning team St Austell Brewery said: ‘We had a great time at the games and it was amazing to have won considering it was our first time. Great fun was had by all and it was a fantastic team building experience for St Austell Brewery’s Finance team. We hope to be back next year! #korevpeople

Rachel Faulkner, NHS Workplace Health Coordinator, commented: “It’s fantastic to be able to offer such an exciting event and inject a bit of fun to the end of a working week.  We hoped the Beach Games would give employees the chance to have some fun with their workmates, meet new people and get a bit more active; going by people’s faces on the day, we 100% succeeded!”

Top tip! No hiding from work email for employees

Companies need to set clear policies on acceptable use of work email, as well as regarding when to switch off - employees need to know it is OK to let work email that arrived after hours wait until the morning.

Mental Health

The total cost to employers due to mental health problems among their staff is estimated at nearly £26 billion each year. That is equivalent to £1,035 for every employee in the UK workforce.
